Short Answer: North Florida insect pressure does not end with summer. Chinch bugs stay active in Jacksonville and St. Augustine into October and sometimes later, tropical sod webworms are usually at their heaviest of the entire year in September and October, and fall armyworms can arrive in large numbers overnight. All three damage St. Augustine grass and all three get misdiagnosed as drought or disease. Correct identification matters, because the treatment and the timing for each one is different and our mild fall gives them a much longer season than most homeowners expect.
Why Bug Season Does Not End in September Here
Homeowners who moved to Jacksonville and St. Augustine from farther north tend to carry an assumption that insects are a summer problem. In north Florida that assumption costs lawns every year.
Our soil and air temperatures stay in the active range for turf insects long after Labor Day. Chinch bugs remain reproductively active while soil temperatures stay warm, tropical sod webworms produce overlapping generations right up until the first real cold, and fall armyworm moths continue arriving on southerly flows. In a mild year the feeding can continue into November.
The practical result is that the period when many people stop paying attention to the lawn is one of the periods when it is most likely to be damaged. And because the growing season is winding down, the lawn has progressively less capacity to grow out of that damage before it slows for winter.
Chinch Bugs and Where They Start
The southern chinch bug is the most destructive insect pest of St. Augustine grass in Florida, and St. Augustine grass is the dominant lawn grass across Duval and St. Johns counties. That combination is why this insect comes up in so many conversations here.
Chinch bugs are not chewers. They are piercing sucking insects. They insert their mouthparts into the stems and crowns, withdraw plant fluids, and inject a substance that disrupts the plant’s ability to move water. The result on the surface looks exactly like drought, which is why so many homeowners respond by watering more and watching the damage keep spreading.
The damage almost always starts in the hottest, driest, most stressed part of the lawn. Look along driveways, sidewalks, curb strips, the south and west facing sides of the house, and anywhere reflected heat concentrates. From there it expands outward in irregular yellowing patches that turn straw brown.
How to Confirm Chinch Bugs
You have to get down into the canopy. Chinch bugs are small, adults reach only about a fifth of an inch, and they do not sit on top of the grass where you can see them from standing height.
- Part the grass at the boundary between healthy green turf and yellowing turf, right down at the soil surface, and watch for small fast moving insects. Adults are black with white wings folded over the back in a distinctive pattern. Immature nymphs are smaller and range from orange red to brown.
- Use the coffee can method. Cut both ends out of a large can, push it a few inches into the soil at the edge of the damage, fill it with water, and keep it topped off for five to ten minutes. Chinch bugs float to the surface.
- Get down on your hands and knees and simply rub your palm across the base of the turf, then look at your hand. On a heavy infestation you will see them.
- Check the crowns for firmness. Chinch bug damaged plants have crowns that are dry and brittle rather than rotted.
Two to five bugs in a can sample is a threshold worth acting on. Twenty or more is a heavy infestation and the damage will expand quickly.
Tropical Sod Webworms Peak in the Fall
If chinch bugs are the summer headline, tropical sod webworms are the fall one, and September and October are typically their heaviest months in north Florida.
The larvae are small green to gray caterpillars that feed at night and hide down in the thatch during the day, curled up, which is why homeowners search the lawn at noon and find nothing. They chew the leaf blades, and the signature damage is notched, ragged, missing tissue along the blade edges giving the lawn a scalped, uneven appearance even right after mowing.
Two clues make this one easy once you know them. First, small tan or gray moths flush up in front of you when you walk across the lawn or run the mower, flying a short distance and dropping back into the canopy. Those are the adults, and they do not cause damage themselves, but their presence means eggs are being laid. Second, look for tiny green pellets of frass down in the thatch, which is the clearest confirmation available to a homeowner.
A soap flush works well for these. A few tablespoons of dish soap in two gallons of water poured over a square yard drives them to the surface within minutes.
Fall Armyworms Arrive All at Once
Fall armyworms are the third fall chewer and they behave differently from the other two. Rather than building slowly, an entire egg mass of one hundred or more hatches together and the larvae move across the property as a group, consuming turf in a band and advancing.
That produces the classic complaint of a lawn that looked fine over the weekend and was stripped to stubble by Wednesday. The advancing front with green ahead of it and brown behind it is the diagnostic feature. A sudden concentration of birds working one section of lawn is often the first thing a homeowner notices.
Mature larvae reach roughly an inch and a half, are striped lengthwise, and carry a pale inverted Y marking on the head. They are the most dramatic of the three but usually the least dangerous long term, because they remove leaf tissue without destroying crowns.
Telling Insect Damage From Drought
This is the most common misdiagnosis in Jacksonville and St. Augustine, and it matters because the wrong response makes things worse.
Drought stress follows your irrigation pattern. It appears in the spots the system covers poorly, on high ground, in sandy areas that drain fastest, and near hardscape. It responds to water within a day or two. Grass blades fold or roll lengthwise and the whole area dulls to a blue gray cast before browning.
Chinch bug damage also starts in the hot dry areas, which is exactly why it fools people, but it keeps expanding despite adequate irrigation. That is the tell. If you have watered thoroughly and correctly for a week and the patch is still growing, stop assuming water is the answer and go look for insects at the margin.
Chewing damage from webworms and armyworms is unambiguous once you look closely, because the blades have physically missing tissue with ragged edges. Drought does not chew.
Telling Insect Damage From Disease
North Florida has an active fall disease season too, and the two get confused.
- Gray leaf spot produces small oval lesions with gray centers and dark borders on individual blades, usually during warm humid stretches.
- Large patch expands in defined circles or rings as soil temperatures fall through the seventies, and affected blades pull out of the crown easily with a dark rotted section at the base.
- Take all root rot causes irregular yellowing and thinning with roots that are short, dark, and rotted rather than white and fibrous.
The most useful single test is the pull test. Grab a handful of grass at the edge of the damage and tug gently. If it lifts away easily with rotted bases, look at disease. If it holds firm but the blades are chewed or the crowns are dry, look at insects.
Why St. Augustine Grass Is Always in the Middle of This
Every one of these pests will feed on other grasses, but St. Augustine takes the brunt here for reasons worth understanding.
It is the dominant lawn grass along the north Florida coast because it tolerates salt, handles some shade, and establishes readily in sandy soil. It also grows a coarse, dense canopy that produces thatch faster than most grasses, and thatch is habitat. Sod webworm larvae hide in it, chinch bugs shelter in it, and insecticide applications have a harder time reaching through it.
Centipede, which is also common on this stretch of coast, is somewhat less attractive to chinch bugs but recovers far more slowly from any damage because it grows slowly and spreads only by stolons.
Managing thatch, mowing at the correct height, and avoiding excess nitrogen all reduce insect pressure indirectly by making the lawn less hospitable. Cultural practice is genuinely part of pest control here.
Why They Keep Coming Back
Homeowners who treat and then see the problem return in six weeks usually assume the product failed. Sometimes it did. More often something else is going on.
Our climate supports multiple generations per season. Treating the larvae present today does nothing about the eggs laid last night or the moths that arrive next week. Repeat monitoring, not a single treatment, is what actually controls a fall population.
Insecticide resistance is also documented in southern chinch bug populations in Florida after decades of repeated use of the same chemistries. Rotating active ingredients matters, and it is a real reason a product that worked for a neighbor may not work on your property.
Finally, coverage frequently fails rather than the chemistry. These insects live at the soil surface underneath a dense canopy. An application that sits on top of the leaves without adequate water volume to carry it down does not reach them.
What to Do When You Find Them
Speed matters more in the fall than at any other time, because the lawn has less season left to recover.
Confirm the pest first with a flush or a can test so you are treating the right thing. Mow before treating if the canopy is tall, which improves penetration. Apply in late afternoon or evening for the night feeding caterpillars. Follow the label on watering in, since some products need to move down to the soil surface and others need to stay on the leaf.
Then check again in three to five days with another flush. In north Florida one treatment in September is rarely the end of the conversation.
Recovery and the Fall Fertilizer Trap
The instinct after insect damage is to fertilize heavily to push regrowth. In Jacksonville and St. Augustine that instinct needs a limit.
Warm season grass needs roughly six weeks between the last nitrogen application and the first frost so new growth can harden off. Our first frost typically arrives sometime in December, which does give north Florida a longer feeding window than markets farther inland, but it is not unlimited. Heavy late nitrogen also increases large patch pressure as soil temperatures fall, and it produces soft tissue that chinch bugs and webworms prefer.
Water, correct mowing height, and patience do most of the recovery work. If damage happened in September, a moderate feeding is reasonable. By late October, let the plant use its own reserves and plan the repair for spring.
What to Do Next
Walk the lawn this week and write down the two or three things that actually bother you about it, then work backward from the window rather than forward from today. Almost every fall mistake we see in Jacksonville and St. Augustine comes from starting with the calendar instead of with the lawn.
