Short Answer: Do not scalp it. Keep mowing at your normal height until growth genuinely stops, which in North San Antonio is usually sometime in late November or December. Leaf tissue is what insulates the crowns and stolons during a cold snap, and removing it right before a freeze exposes the growing points. Hold St. Augustine at three to four inches, bermuda at one and a half to two and a half, and zoysia in between. If you change height at all, change it gradually and never remove more than a third of the blade in one cut.
The Myth Worth Killing First
Somewhere along the way, a lot of Texas homeowners picked up the idea that a lawn should be cut way down before winter. The reasoning usually offered is that short grass will not mat down, or that it helps the lawn go dormant cleanly, or simply that it looks tidier through the off season.
On a home lawn in North San Antonio, that is a bad trade. Golf courses do scalp bermuda in late winter, but they do it in February or March at the end of dormancy, with specialized equipment, specifically to remove dead tissue and warm the soil ahead of green up. That is a completely different operation from cutting your lawn short in November, before the cold has even arrived.
Cutting a warm season lawn low right before freezing weather removes the insulation the plant was counting on.
What Leaf Tissue Is Actually Doing
The part of a warm season grass plant that has to survive winter is not the blades. It is the crown at the base, plus the stolons on the surface and rhizomes below on bermuda and zoysia. Those are the growing points, and if they die, the grass does not come back in that spot.
Standing leaf tissue moderates temperature at the soil surface. It traps a small pocket of warmer air, buffers the swing between a seventy degree afternoon and a twenty eight degree dawn, and shields stolons from direct exposure. Central Texas cold events are typically short and sharp rather than long and steady, so that buffering has real value.
A lawn cut to an inch in mid November has almost none of that protection. St. Augustine is especially vulnerable because its growing points sit right on the surface in exposed stolons, with nothing underground to fall back on.
Identify Your Grass Before You Set the Deck
Correct height depends entirely on species, and North San Antonio has a real mix.
- St. Augustine is the most common lawn grass across much of the area. Wide thick blades, thick ropey runners across the surface, good shade tolerance, no underground rhizomes.
- Bermuda has fine blades, spreads by both surface stolons and underground rhizomes, and requires full sun. It creeps into flower beds.
- Zoysia feels dense and springy underfoot with stiff blades, tolerates light shade, and spreads slowly.
- Buffalograss and native mixes show up on larger properties and xeriscape lots. Fine and blue green, very drought tolerant, and generally mowed high or not at all.
Get on your hands and knees and look at how the plant grows. That two minute check prevents most of the mistakes in this article.
The Right Heights for Here
These are working ranges for home lawns in our area.
- St. Augustine: three to four inches, and toward the top of that range in shade. Cutting St. Augustine short is one of the most reliable ways to thin it out, because it reduces the leaf area the plant needs to feed itself and exposes stolons to sun scald.
- Common bermuda: one and a half to two and a half inches for a rotary mower on a home lawn. Hybrid bermudas tolerate lower but need more equipment and more attention than most homeowners want to give.
- Zoysia: roughly one and a half to three inches depending on the variety, with the coarser types going higher.
- Buffalograss: three inches or more, or left unmowed in a naturalized area.
Higher mowing generally means deeper roots, better drought tolerance, and fewer weeds, because a dense canopy shades the soil and keeps weed seed from getting the light it needs. In a region where drought and watering restrictions are a standing condition rather than an occasional event, that is not a small benefit.
The One Third Rule
Never remove more than about a third of the leaf blade in a single cut, in any season, and especially not in fall.
Cutting more than that shocks the plant. It loses a large share of its photosynthetic capacity at once, and it responds by pulling energy from roots to rebuild leaves. In fall, when the plant should be moving energy the other direction into storage, that is exactly backward. A lawn that gets scalped in October goes into winter with fewer reserves than it otherwise would.
Practically, this means if the grass got away from you and is twice its normal height, cut it in two passes several days apart rather than dropping it in one go.
If You Do Change Height, Change It Slowly
There are legitimate reasons to lower a lawn modestly going into fall. Very tall St. Augustine can mat and hold moisture, which raises disease pressure during the season when large patch and take-all root rot are active in warm moist soil.
If that describes your lawn, come down in steps of half an inch across two or three mowings, and stop while you are still within the healthy range for the species. Do not use disease concerns as a reason to go to the lowest setting on the mower.
When to Stop Mowing
Stop when the grass stops, not on a date.
North San Antonio has a long season and a late first frost, often not until late November and sometimes into December. In a mild year bermuda may keep pushing enough growth to need cutting well into the fall, and there are winters here where warm season grass never goes fully, uniformly dormant.
The practical test is simple. If you can see growth since the last cut, mow. If the lawn looks the same as it did two weeks ago, you are done for the year. Keep the mower ready rather than putting it away in October, because a warm December stretch will bring growth back.
The Last Cut of the Season
Make the final mowing a normal one. Same height, sharp blade, clippings returned unless there is a reason not to.
What matters more than height on that last pass is what you leave behind. Do not leave long clumps of wet clippings sitting on the lawn going into winter. Clumps smother dormant grass underneath and create the persistently damp conditions fungal problems need. If the grass was tall or damp when you cut it, go over it again to break up the rows.
Sharp Blades Matter More Right Now
A dull mower blade tears leaf tissue instead of cutting it. Torn tips lose water faster, take longer to heal, and give disease organisms an easier entry point.
That is true all year, but fall is when the consequences are worst, because the grass is slowing down and has less capacity to repair damage. It is also the season when moisture and moderate soil temperatures make our common turf diseases most active.
Look at the blade tips after mowing. A clean cut leaves a crisp edge. A dull blade leaves frayed white ends across the lawn, which also makes the whole yard look hazy and off color from a distance. Sharpen or replace before the last few cuts of the year.
Clippings Stay, With One Exception
Leave the clippings on the lawn. They are mostly water, they break down quickly, and they return a meaningful amount of nitrogen and other nutrients to the soil over a season. They do not cause thatch. Thatch is made of stems and stolons, not leaf clippings.
The exception is a lawn with an active fungal problem. If you have circular expanding patches, bagging clippings from the affected area reduces the amount of infected material you spread across the rest of the lawn.
Leaves and Debris on Dormant Turf
Once the lawn is dormant and tan, it is still alive and it still needs light and air at the soil surface.
A wet mat of live oak leaves sitting on dormant St. Augustine for six weeks will kill the grass under it. Keep leaves moving, either by raking, blowing, or mulching them with the mower when the layer is light. Mulching is fine and returns organic matter, but only in thin layers. A heavy load needs to come off.
The same goes for anything else left on the lawn through winter: kiddie pools, tarps, stacked lumber, holiday inflatables in one spot for a month. Every one of those leaves a dead footprint you will be repairing in the spring.
How Mowing Fits With the Rest of the Fall Program
Mowing decisions connect to the two applications that actually matter this time of year.
Your fall pre-emergent should go down when soil temperature at two inches falls through about 70 degrees, which stops annual bluegrass, henbit, chickweed, and burclover before they emerge. A dense, properly high canopy makes that application more effective by shading the soil, while a scalped lawn hands weed seed the light it wants.
And nitrogen timing. The last real feeding on warm season grass here should land roughly six weeks before average first frost, which generally means late summer into early September. Late nitrogen plus a low cut is the worst combination available: soft new growth with no insulation over the crowns heading into a cold front.
One more note specific to our soils. North San Antonio sits on thin, rocky, alkaline ground over limestone, often with very high pH. That locks up iron and produces pale yellow lawns that look underfed. More nitrogen does not fix that and in fall it is harmful. Iron does, and it carries none of the winter injury risk.
What to Do Next
Walk the lawn this week and write down the two or three things that actually bother you about it, then work backward from the window rather than forward from today. Almost every fall mistake we see in North San Antonio comes from starting with the calendar instead of with the lawn.
