The caterpillars are about an inch and a half long when mature, light to dark green or brown, with a distinct inverted Y mark on the head and four dark spots arranged in a square on the second-to-last body segment.
They feed at night and on cloudy days, hiding in the thatch during direct sun. A single generation runs about 30 days from egg to moth. Each female lays 100 to 200 eggs at a time, often on flat surfaces near the lawn like fence boards, eaves, light poles, or even patio furniture. That is why you can have a clean lawn one week and an active outbreak the next.
The damage is straight-up chewing. They eat grass blades from the edges inward, leaving notched or window-paned tissue at first, then bare stems, then bare soil. On St. Augustine, you will see runners that look stripped. On Bermuda, the canopy gets shaved down to brown stubble fast.

These products kill on contact and provide several weeks of residual protection. Effects show within hours, with full kill in 24 to 48 hours.

The key with any product is to apply in the evening when armyworms come out to feed, water in lightly if the label calls for it, and avoid mowing for 24 hours afterward so the product stays on the canopy where the caterpillars are.
Why July and August Are the Critical Window
Across Northeast Florida, armyworm pressure climbs steadily from late June through September. The combination of warm nights, frequent thunderstorms, and high humidity is ideal for moth flight and egg survival. We see the heaviest damage from late July through early September.
The other reason this window matters: your lawn is already stressed. July heat, fungal pressure, and any chinch bug activity have all been pulling on the same root system. Armyworm damage piled on top of those stresses can tip a marginal lawn into needing full replacement, while a healthy lawn might shrug off the same caterpillar load with supportive recovery.
Properties that have been fertilized recently or that have lush, fast-growing turf attract armyworm moths preferentially. If you just put down a heavy nitrogen application, scout extra carefully for the next three weeks.
What to Do During Recovery
If you treated within the early window and the runners and crowns of the grass are still alive, recovery is straightforward. Resume regular irrigation. Skip aggressive mowing for one to two weeks so the canopy can rebuild. Hold off on additional fertilizer for two weeks, then resume a moderate program. Most St. Augustine and Bermuda lawns regrow visible canopy within three to four weeks.
If the damage reached bare soil with no surviving runners, recovery requires re-establishment. St. Augustine usually needs to be sodded into the dead zones because it does not seed reliably. Bermuda can sometimes be sprigged or seeded, depending on variety. Either way, the sooner you start the rehab, the better the result before fall.
Continue scouting through August and September. Armyworms come in waves. A single treatment knocks down the current generation, but a fresh moth flight can drop new eggs on your lawn within two to three weeks.
Common Questions
Are armyworms the same as sod webworms? No. Both are caterpillars that chew grass blades, but sod webworms are smaller, build silken tubes in the thatch, and feed only at night. Armyworms are larger and more destructive per caterpillar. The soap-flush test brings both to the surface for identification.
