Of all the lawn pests we deal with each summer in Huntsville, fall armyworms are the one that demands the fastest response. Chinch bugs are slow. Brown patch builds over a week or two. Sod webworms damage gradually. Fall armyworms can chew through a textbook-green Madison Bermuda lawn in a single hot weekend, and the Monday morning call from the homeowner is the same every time. “It was fine on Friday. What happened?”
The good news is that armyworms leave clear signals once you know what to look for, and they are simple to control when caught early. The bad news is that the window between “first sign of damage” and “the whole yard is brown” can be as short as 48 hours during peak season. The lawns we save are the ones where the homeowner caught it on a weekend scouting walk before the second wave of caterpillars matured.

Why the Tennessee Valley Sits in the Armyworm Path
Fall armyworms (Spodoptera frugiperda) cannot survive Huntsville winters. They overwinter in south Florida and along the Gulf Coast and migrate north each spring and summer. By mid-July most years, populations have reached north Alabama. By August and into early October, pressure peaks across the Tennessee Valley. Major storm systems running north from the Gulf carry moths faster than they can fly, which is why severe armyworm outbreaks in Huntsville often follow on the heels of a tropical system or a strong frontal pattern.
2021 was the worst outbreak the Tennessee Valley has seen in living memory. We had Bermuda lawns in Madison, Zoysia lawns in Twickenham, and Fescue lawns in Hampton Cove going from solid green on a Thursday to clipped stubble by Sunday. Years since then have been more manageable but never zero. The lawns hit hardest were the well-watered, well-fertilized ones since egg-laying moths prefer lush green growth. That bears repeating: doing everything right does not protect you. It actually marks your lawn as a higher-priority target for the next generation.
What Armyworm Damage Looks Like
The first sign is easy to miss because it looks like a poorly performed mowing. Walk the lawn at low sun angle and look at the upper canopy. Healthy turf has clean leaf tips. A lawn with small armyworms has ragged, shredded tips and a translucent, papery look across patches where the caterpillars have grazed the upper tissue.
Within two to four days that subtle thinning becomes visible brown patches, often starting at the edge of the lawn nearest a hayfield, woods, pasture, or any taller grass where moths laid eggs. The patches grow faster every day because mature armyworm caterpillars eat far more than younger ones. A heavy infestation can defoliate a thousand square feet a day.
The third sign is birds. Mockingbirds, brown thrashers, robins, and grackles love armyworms. If you see a flock of birds concentrated on one section of your lawn in late July, August, or early September, walk over and look closely. The birds know before you do.
The Weekly Scouting Habit That Catches Them Early
From July 1 through the first frost, we recommend a 90-second walk every Saturday or Sunday morning. Start at the lawn perimeter, especially the edge nearest taller grass or wooded areas. Look for:
- Leaf tips that look ragged or translucent rather than cleanly cut.
- A brown patch at the lawn edge that was not there last week.
- Bird activity concentrated on one area.
- Small dark green frass on leaf blades, especially visible after dew.
If anything looks suspicious, do a soap flush. Mix two tablespoons of liquid dish soap with one gallon of water. Pour it slowly across a one-square-yard area of suspect turf. Wait three to five minutes. Caterpillars get irritated by the soap and crawl to the surface. Look for the inverted Y mark on the head that signals fall armyworm.
How to Identify a Fall Armyworm
Fall armyworm caterpillars have a few signature features. Mature larvae are about an inch and a half long with three pale yellow stripes running the length of the body. The head capsule is dark with a pale, inverted Y-shaped mark between the eyes. Body color varies from light green to almost black depending on age and diet, but the inverted Y on the head is consistent.
Sod webworms are smaller, gray-green, build silken tubes in the thatch, and curl up if disturbed. Cutworms are fatter, curl into a tight C, and feed mostly at night. The treatments for all three overlap, but armyworms have the worst reputation because of how fast they spread.
Treatment Selection and Timing
Confirmed armyworms get treated the same day. No wait-and-see. The products we use across our service area are bifenthrin (Talstar, Bifen, several consumer brands) for fast knockdown, chlorantraniliprole (Acelepryn at professional rates and several consumer equivalents) for longer residual and preventive coverage, and spinosad for homeowners who want a gentler-on-beneficials option.
Bifenthrin generally knocks the active infestation down within 24 to 48 hours. Chlorantraniliprole works as both curative and preventive, which is what we lean on when armyworm pressure has been reported elsewhere in the Tennessee Valley and you want protection for the next few weeks.
Application matters. Use higher water volume than a routine spray to push the product into the canopy and thatch. Spray in late afternoon or evening when caterpillars are climbing up to feed. Skip mowing for 24 hours after treatment so the product stays on the leaf blades. A second application five to seven days later may be needed if eggs were already laid before the first treatment.
Fescue Considerations
Fescue lawns at the northern end of our service area are vulnerable to armyworms too, often more so because the homeowner is not expecting a Bermuda-style outbreak on a cool-season lawn. The damage looks identical: clipped or translucent leaf tips, expanding brown patches, bird activity. Treatment is the same as on Bermuda or Zoysia.
The recovery is the part that differs. Fescue does not have stolons or runners. It cannot fill back in by spreading the way Bermuda and Zoysia can. A severely defoliated fescue lawn in late July or August will need overseeding in September to recover full density. Plan that into the year if your fescue takes a hit. The good news is that early September is when we plant fescue anyway across the Huntsville area, so the recovery timeline aligns with normal seasonal renovation.
Recovery Expectations
Bermuda and Zoysia have remarkable recovery in July and August Tennessee Valley conditions. Armyworms eat the leaf tissue but typically leave crowns and stolons intact, so the lawn rebounds quickly once caterpillars are dead. Expect green-up within seven to ten days post-treatment on Bermuda, ten to fourteen on Zoysia. Support recovery with deep watering (one inch per week split into two cycles), a light nitrogen feeding on warm-season grasses (about a quarter to a half pound per thousand square feet), and patience.
By early September a July outbreak that was caught quickly will usually look like it never happened on Bermuda and Zoysia. Fescue may need overseed support for full recovery.
What to Do Next
If you spot ragged leaf tips, an expanding brown patch starting at the lawn edge, or a flock of birds working one section of turf, do a soap flush today. If it confirms armyworms, treat today. The cost of a quick response is one product application. The cost of waiting through a hot July weekend is sometimes a full sod replacement on a meaningful section of the yard.
