What you are looking for is a green to brown caterpillar with light stripes running the length of the body and a pale inverted Y marking on the dark head capsule. When Treatment Is Warranted
A few caterpillars in a healthy lawn is not an emergency, and blanket spraying every August is neither necessary nor good stewardship. The common working guideline in turf is that treatment is justified when a flush turns up roughly three or more per square foot, or when you can see active damage expanding day over day. Size matters as much as number. Small caterpillars are easy to control and have done little damage. Large ones eat the most, are harder to control, and may be nearly finished feeding anyway, at which point you are paying to kill insects that were about to leave.
There is also a real difference between products, and it is worth knowing what you are buying. Some materials knock down what is present today and break down quickly, which is the right tool during an active feeding event. Others are designed to sit on the leaf surface and hold for a period afterward, which makes more sense on a property that borders a hay field and has seen repeat pressure in past seasons. Neither one is a permanent shield, and a preventive grub product applied earlier in the year does not control caterpillars feeding on the leaf surface, which is a common and expensive misunderstanding.
If treatment is the right call, timing within the day helps. Late afternoon applications line up with peak feeding activity, and watering lightly beforehand rather than after keeps the material where the caterpillars are. Mow before treating rather than right after. Because these insects arrive in waves through late summer and early fall, one clean scouting result does not close the book, and checking the field edge weekly is a sensible habit until nights cool off.
Recovery: Which Lawns Bounce Back
This is the part that surprises people, and it is genuinely good news. Fall armyworms feed on leaf tissue, not roots and not crowns. A warm season lawn that is otherwise healthy usually regrows.
