Short Answer: In South Miami, the dominant turf caterpillar is tropical sod webworm, not fall armyworm. Moth flights run nearly year round because winter never breaks the life cycle. Scout twice a week from April through December for tan zigzagging moths at dusk, silken webbing in the thatch at sunrise, and bird flocks (ibis, grackles) working a single zone. Confirm with a flush test and match treatment to the rainy-season forecast. On Floratam, Palmetto, Bitterblue, and Captiva, recovery hinges on catching damage inside the first week.
The Coconut Grove call came in on a Wednesday. The homeowner had replaced 1,400 square feet of Floratam after Hurricane Milton in October 2024. By Sunday she sent a photo. The spring sod was thinning near the bromeliad bed, with frayed blades that looked chewed. She thought it was fungus. It was tropical sod webworm, hidden under banyan canopy, doing exactly what webworm does in South Florida: grinding down a recovering lawn one quiet generation at a time.
What surprises most homeowners in Pinecrest, Palmetto Bay, Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, and Cutler Bay is that the pest playbook used in north Florida or Palm Beach County does not map onto South Miami.
Why South Miami Is Its Own Caterpillar Climate
Most Florida lawn-pest content treats armyworm as the headline insect and tells you to scout in late July. That timing comes from north and central Florida, where moth populations crash through cool months. In Miami-Dade we do not get that reset. UF/IFAS Miami-Dade Extension data and EDDMapS reporting both show tropical sod webworm moths active every month of the year, with peaks tied to rainfall events rather than the calendar.
That changes the strategy. South Miami homeowners need continuous monitoring from the start of the rainy season in late April through the first cool front. Two five-minute walks a week beats one panic inspection in August.
It also changes which pest sits at the top. Fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) gets the press because outbreaks are dramatic, but tropical sod webworm (Herpetogramma phaeopteralis) does more cumulative damage to South Miami St. Augustine in most years.
Telling the Two Pests Apart
Damage signature and action threshold are different for each species.
- Fall armyworm larvae reach about 1.5 inches. Smooth body, light green to nearly black, with a pale inverted Y on the head and four dark spots near the tail. Damage looks like rapid clear-cut zones with an advancing front.
- Tropical sod webworm larvae are smaller, around 0.75 inch, pale green to gray with a dark head. They build silken tubes in the thatch and surface only at night. Damage starts as window-paned blades and small notched areas, then expands as patchy thinning.
- Webworm moths are small, tan to silvery, about half an inch, holding wings flat at rest. They flush from the canopy in zigzag bursts at dusk. A handful per minute is normal. Dozens per minute means treat.
- Armyworm moths are larger, grayish brown, flying lower and straighter, often noticed around porch lights at dawn.
If you scout consistently you will see webworm moths most weeks. The job is to spot the population surge, not react to every moth.
St. Augustine Cultivar Notes for South Miami
Not every St. Augustine reacts the same way. Knowing what is under your feet shapes both scouting and recovery.
- Floratam dominates older Coral Gables and South Miami yards. Coarse, sun-loving, highly attractive to egg-laying moths, slow to bounce back because runners are widely spaced.
- Palmetto is common in mid-age Pinecrest and Palmetto Bay properties. Finer blade, decent shade tolerance, moderate vulnerability, recovers well if treated early.
- Bitterblue shows up on classic Coconut Grove lots under canopy. Holds color in low light, but soft blade is candy to early-instar larvae and damage hides under live oak and gumbo limbo leaf litter.
- Captiva is common on newer Cutler Bay construction and post-storm replacements. Compact dwarf habit, fast establishment. First-year Captiva is a webworm magnet because the dense canopy holds humidity in the thatch.
If you are not sure which cultivar you have, take a photo of the blade and a runner to your UF/IFAS Miami-Dade Extension Office. Cultivar identification changes both pest tolerance and fertilizer rate.
Coral Rock, Rainy Season, and Treatment Timing
Almost every South Miami lawn sits on shallow oolitic limestone. Three to six inches of soil, then coral rock. That bedrock changes how water moves and how insecticides behave. Liquid applications can wash off before they bind if a thunderstorm hits within the hour, and granulars that need water-in can run off the rock layer or perch in saturated thatch where caterpillars never contact them.
South Florida receives roughly 60 inches of rain a year, with the bulk falling between June and September. Treatment timing has to ride the radar:
- Treat in the morning of a forecast dry window of at least four to six hours.
- Water in lightly only if the label requires it, using controlled irrigation rather than waiting on rain.
- Avoid the hour before a typical afternoon convection storm builds in July and August.
- For larger properties, split applications so a single washout does not blow the whole treatment.
Hydrophobic, baked-out thatch becomes a webworm shelter after a dry stretch in May. The first heavy rains rebound the canopy but the thatch stays dry underneath, creating a microclimate the larvae like.
Post-Hurricane Lawns Are Higher Risk
South Miami has rebuilt its turf repeatedly since Hurricane Irma in 2017. Ian in 2022 and the Helene and Milton sequence in 2024 added more rounds of sod replacement. New sod is more vulnerable: the root system has not knitted into the coral rock yet, and freshly laid sod creates the lush, humid, fertilized conditions moths seek for egg-laying.
If you have laid sod in the last 18 months, treat the property as a higher-vigilance zone. Twice-weekly dusk walks, a flush test at any sign of patchy thinning, and a preventive chlorantraniliprole application timed to the start of the rainy season is reasonable insurance.
Treatment Choices That Respect Pollinators
Many Pinecrest and Coconut Grove yards include registered monarch waystations, butterfly gardens, or summer-flowering fruit trees. Broad pyrethroid sprays solve the caterpillar problem and hurt the pollinator program at the same time. Better choices:
- Chlorantraniliprole for residual across multiple webworm generations. Lower impact on bees and butterflies than pyrethroids, longer residual matches South Miami’s continuous-pressure pattern.
- Bt kurstaki for early-instar webworm. Effective on small larvae, very pollinator friendly, requires direct contact and reapplication if rain hits within 24 hours.
- Spinosad as a middle option. Faster knockdown than Bt, manageable pollinator risk if applied at dusk after foraging ends.
Skip flowering weeds, keep product on turf rather than garden beds, and time everything for evening so bees are back in the hive before residue dries.
What to Do Next
Put two five-minute scouting walks on your calendar each week from now through the first cool front. Look for tan moths flushing from the canopy at dusk, silken webbing in the thatch at dawn, ibis or grackles working a single zone, and any patchy thinning where blade tips look chewed. Run a flush test on the suspect area the same day. If counts cross threshold, treat inside 48 hours.
