You stand on your Bellaire patio looking out at the St. Augustine you have nursed through three previous Houston summers, and something is off. There are patches that look yellow from the porch but do not quite look brown. The neighboring lawn looks fine. You ran the sprinklers an extra cycle last week because you assumed it was drought, and the patches got worse. That is the moment many West Houston homeowners realize they may be looking at take-all root rot, the disease that has quietly damaged more St. Augustine lawns in our service area than any other.
The good news is that if you catch it in June, you still have options. The hard news is that if you wait until August, much of the damaged turf will not come back this year. Here is what take-all is, what the early signs look like, and how to treat it before peak summer takes the rest of the lawn with it.
What Take-All Root Rot Actually Is
Take-all root rot (sometimes abbreviated TARR) is caused by the soil fungus Gaeumannomyces graminis var. graminis. It lives in the soil at low levels in most St. Augustine lawns across the Gulf Coast, and under the right combination of warm soil temperatures, high moisture, and host stress, it attacks the roots, rhizomes, and stolons. Above ground, you see yellowing and thinning. Below ground, the disease has been working for weeks before symptoms appear.
The fungus is most active when soil temperatures sit in the 75 to 85 degree range, which in West Houston covers a long window from late May through October. Heavy rain events that saturate gumbo clay for days at a time are practically an invitation. Combine wet soil, warm soil, and the typical fertilizer-and-irrigation routine of a residential lawn, and you have ideal conditions for the disease.
The disease is host-specific to St. Augustine in our area. Bermuda and Zoysia lawns can show different root diseases but generally do not develop classic take-all symptoms. If your yard has mixed grasses, the symptoms typically appear only in the St. Augustine sections.
The Early Signs Most Homeowners Miss
Take-all is sneaky because the early symptoms look like a lot of other things. Here are the specific tells that tip us off when we walk a West Houston lawn in June.
- Yellowed or pale-green irregular patches that are not perfectly circular and not tied to any obvious sun pattern.
- Canopy thinning, where you can see soil through the grass without there being any active damage on individual blades.
- Stolons (the runners) that pull up easily when tugged, often with no roots left underneath.
- Dark brown to black lesions on roots and stolons when you wash a sample under the tap.
- A lawn that does not respond to extra fertilizer or extra water (often gets worse).
- Patches that started small in May and are noticeably bigger by mid-June.
The single best in-field confirmation is the stolon tug. Pick a yellow area, grab a runner, and pull gently upward. Healthy St. Augustine resists because the roots are deep and the runner is anchored. Take-all affected St. Augustine slides up with almost no resistance because the roots and the anchoring rhizome have rotted out from under it.
Why June Is the Critical Window
By the time the dramatic brown patches show up in July and August, take-all has already destroyed much of the root system. Recovery in that scenario is slow, often incomplete, and frequently requires partial sod replacement.
In June, the disease is active but the lawn still has enough healthy stolons and crowns to recover if you remove the stressors and apply targeted treatment. Soil temperatures favor the fungus but the grass is also actively growing and can replace damaged tissue.
Miss the June window and your treatment options narrow. Catch it in June and you can hold the line.
How to Tell Take-All From Other June Problems
Several other issues can mimic take-all. Here is the field walk we do to differentiate.
Drought stress: roots are intact, blades fold and turn bluish-gray, recovery is rapid with deep watering. Take-all roots are rotted and recovery is not water-dependent.
Chinch bug damage: starts at sun-baked edges along concrete, with insects visible on a soap flush. Take-all damage is often in the interior and shaded areas, no insects on soap flush.
Brown patch (large patch): more circular, with smoky margins, often expanding overnight after rain. Take-all is more irregular, slower to expand, and persistently progressive.
Iron chlorosis: uniform yellowing across the lawn with green veins on individual blades. Take-all is patchy with intact veining.
If you are not certain after this walk, a lab diagnosis from Texas A&M’s Plant Disease Diagnostic Laboratory or a private lab can confirm. Diagnosis is inexpensive and definitive.
Treatment Plan: Fungicide Plus Culture
Take-all responds to a multi-pronged plan. Single interventions rarely work because the disease has multiple drivers.
Fungicide: Labeled fungicides for take-all on St. Augustine include azoxystrobin (Heritage and generics), thiophanate-methyl, and propiconazole. Application timing matters. The active ingredient needs to reach the root zone where the fungus lives, so water in deeply after application (a quarter to half inch of irrigation). Two applications spaced 21 to 28 days apart are standard. A single application is rarely sufficient on lawns with established disease.
Soil acidification: Take-all favors slightly alkaline soil. Lowering soil pH in affected areas to the 5.5 to 6.5 range can dramatically reduce disease activity. A topdressing of sphagnum peat moss (a quarter inch, raked in lightly) is the time-honored Texas A&M recommendation. Elemental sulfur applied at a labeled rate is a longer-term option.
Mowing height: Raise the mower to 4 inches on affected St. Augustine. Tall canopy supports deeper rooting, which is exactly what take-all damaged lawns need most.
Fertility: Use balanced fertilizer with potassium emphasis, which supports root health. Avoid high nitrogen during active disease, which pushes vulnerable top growth at the expense of root recovery. Add iron and manganese, which can be deficient on Gulf Coast soils and support overall plant vigor.
Drainage: Take-all loves saturated soil. If you have low spots that stay wet for days after rain, improving drainage (whether by regrading, French drains, or aerating to break the surface crust) is part of long-term recovery.
What Recovery Actually Looks Like
Setting honest expectations matters. Take-all recovery on St. Augustine is rarely the dramatic before-and-after we like to see with other problems. Here is the typical timeline for a Bellaire or West Houston lawn caught in June.
- Weeks 1 to 4: fungicide stops disease advance, but visible recovery is slow.
- Weeks 4 to 8: new green growth begins from healthy stolons around damaged areas.
- Weeks 8 to 16: significant fill-in if cultural fixes have held.
- Severely damaged areas: may need plug or sod patching in fall once peak heat has passed.
A lawn caught in late August often does not recover the same year and needs sod patching in the following spring.
Preventing the Next Round
Take-all does not disappear after one treatment season. The fungus persists in the soil. The customers who keep take-all under control long term tend to do the same things every year.
Mow tall, water deeply but infrequently with cycle and soak, avoid heavy nitrogen in late spring and summer, supplement iron and manganese, address drainage problems aggressively, and consider a preventive fungicide application in late May or early June on lawns with disease history.
The single most important habit is to walk the lawn weekly during May, June, and July. Take-all that is caught and treated in week 1 is a very different problem from take-all that is treated in week 6.
