They look beautiful and they reflect heat into the surrounding turf at intensities far beyond what the grass evolved to handle.
A St. Augustine blade two feet from a south facing limestone retaining wall is sitting in air that runs ten to fifteen degrees hotter than the air twenty feet away. The soil temperature against the wall can hit 115 degrees in the afternoon. Grass cells start dying around 105. No amount of normal watering offsets that.
Look for narrow brown bands that hug the edges of stone features, mirror the shape of the driveway, or appear in regular geometric patterns. If the brown matches the hardscape, the heat is the cause. Solutions include shade plantings, swapping stressed turf for ground cover or decomposed granite, raising mowing height to insulate the soil, and a wetting agent application that helps the soil hold what little water it gets.
How to Diagnose Your Lawn in Thirty Minutes
Walk the yard with a screwdriver, a coffee can, and your phone camera. Push the screwdriver in at six spots across the lawn and note where it goes deep and where it stops short. Run the float test at the edge of any brown patch in a sun-baked area. Pull a few stolons or tug at the brown grass to test root anchoring.
