The Preparation That Actually Changes Outcomes
The most valuable thing you can do for your property happens months before any watch is issued, and it involves trees rather than turf. Structural pruning that removes dead wood, thins a dense canopy so wind passes through instead of pushing against it, and corrects weak branch attachments genuinely reduces the odds of losing a limb or a whole tree. That work should be done by someone qualified, on a normal calendar, not in a panic.
Emergency topping, the practice of cutting a canopy back severely as a storm approaches, is worth avoiding. It leaves large wounds, triggers a flush of weakly attached regrowth, and often makes the tree less stable in the following season rather than more. Fresh cuts also mean fresh debris that has not been hauled away yet.
Closer to an event, the checklist is short. Bring in or secure furniture, umbrellas, planters and anything else that becomes airborne. Clear gutters, drains and swale inlets so water has somewhere to go. Shut off automatic irrigation, because a controller running on schedule into an already saturated yard helps nobody. In the soil, sodium does two things. It also displaces calcium and magnesium on the soil exchange sites, which degrades soil structure and disrupts the plant’s nutrition. St. Augustine has moderate salt tolerance, better than many species and nowhere near unlimited. Symptoms build over one to three weeks, so a lawn can look acceptable two days after an event and considerably worse by the middle of the month.
The fix is dilution. Salt has to be leached down and out with generous fresh water, applied deeply and repeatedly once supply and any local restrictions allow. Gypsum, which is calcium sulfate, helps by supplying calcium that displaces sodium from the exchange sites so the flush can carry it away. What Days of Standing Water Do
Freshwater flooding is a different injury. Roots need oxygen, and saturated soil has almost none. St. Augustine can generally tolerate short term inundation, especially while actively growing, but the damage curve steepens quickly after a few days, and warm floodwater is harder on turf than cool. If the water sits long enough, root function is lost and the plant declines even after the surface dries.
Silt is the other issue people underestimate. Then, deliberately, do less. Stay off saturated ground. Driving a mower or a truck across soggy soil compacts it in a way you will be fighting for a year. Let it firm up first. When you do mow again, cut high and take only a little off, and use a sharp blade.
If salt reached your property, start the fresh water flush as soon as water is available and continue it over several sessions. Apply gypsum to the affected areas. Hold off on fertilizer until you see actual new growth, and when you resume, go with a light, balanced feeding rather than a heavy nitrogen push into weakened turf. Potassium is genuinely useful during this stretch because it supports root recovery and stress tolerance.
