Best Sights and Neighborhoods to Visit in Princeton, MA

Princeton, Massachusetts, is a town of approximately 3,500 residents in Worcester County — one of the most dramatically situated and most naturally endowed hilltop communities in central Massachusetts, a town incorporated in 1759 whose position on the slopes and summit ridge of Mount Wachusett gives it a commanding physical presence over the surrounding landscape, whose identity is defined above all by the mountain that rises from its center, and whose combination of conservation lands, wildlife sanctuaries, working farms, and one of the most acclaimed small restaurants in the region makes it a genuine destination for visitors willing to make the drive into the central Massachusetts highlands. Princeton sits at one of the highest elevations of any town in eastern Massachusetts, a geography that produces spectacular views, significant snowfall that supports a working ski area, and a quality of rural character that feels genuinely remote despite being less than an hour from both Worcester and Boston. Harrington Farm at 178 Westminster Road is Princeton’s most scenically spectacular and most warmly celebrated wedding and events venue — open Monday through Thursday from 9 AM to 5 PM and Friday through Sunday from 9 AM to midnight with a ceremony spot described as absolutely gorgeous, a beautiful secluded setting that couples fall in love with immediately, a cocktail hour tent made so cute and charming by staff, wedding coordinator Lauryn described as AMAZING, so sweet, so thorough, and so attentive, serving staff described as EXCEPTIONAL, dinner described as hot and delicious with a cocktail hour offering an excellent choice of hot and cold items, and a setting where at one wedding the sun was setting to the west and the almost full moon rising to the east — described as truly the most perfect day where from the moment couples begin working with the staff their knowledge and expertise in creating the best wedding experience is evident, as a place couples fell in love with for its beautiful secluded setting and where staff does a wonderful job making every element so cute and charming, and as an evening so exceptional that after many years and many weddings you can say Harrington Farm is one of the truly special ones. Redemption Rock off Redemption Rock Trail North is Princeton’s most historically resonant and most geologically striking Trustees of Reservations site — a large flat-top granite outcropping just off the road on a quarter-acre site, described as the second most important rock in American history only bested by Plymouth Rock, the site where Mary Rowlandson was released from captivity after 11 weeks following the 1676 Lancaster Raid after a ransom of 20 pounds sterling was paid, with trails extending north on the Midstate Trail for 10 to 15 minutes to get a nice view of Wachusett Mountain, and beautiful trails in all directions — described as a trip back in time to the colonial days and a fascinating story about Mary Rowlandson’s capture and release, and as a place stumbled upon while hiking with dogs that prompts philosophical reflection. Rattle Root Farm at 89 Mirick Road rounds out Princeton’s cultural picture as the town’s most lovingly tended and most enthusiastically praised organic CSA farm — open Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10 AM to 5 PM with a CSA membership structure offering six points per week for a half share covering two heads of lettuce, eight ounces of spinach, two pounds of tomatoes, and other beautiful farm-fresh items, pick-your-own herbs and flowers, farmers Joey, Peter, and Hannah described as friendly and happy to explain anything you want to know — described as a place that blew CSA members away with the consistent quality of produce from the moment they opened in 2023, as a gem where members get to choose from a variety of beautiful farm-fresh treats every week with the added bonus of pick-your-own herbs and flowers, and as wonderful organic vegetables that taste delicious from friendly and caring farmers who put their love and hard work into every single planting.

Princeton’s outdoor landscape is dominated by Wachusett Mountain and the constellation of trails, sanctuaries, and conservation lands that surround it — a natural environment so comprehensively protected and so scenically varied that Princeton functions as one of the premier outdoor recreation destinations in all of central Massachusetts. Wachusett Mountain State Reservation at 345 Mountain Road is Princeton’s most universally celebrated and most panoramically rewarding outdoor destination — open from 6:30 AM with summit views of miles of rolling hills and even distant mountains on a clear day, the ability to drive right to the top for those with mobility issues, at least four different hiking trails, well-marked and kept quite clean, a deck at the summit, plenty of free parking, a visitor center at the bottom with wonderful displays of animals and birds, clean restrooms, and friendly staff, and occasional food truck festivals at the base worth the $5 entrance — described as a great escape where the hike was fun and manageable and the views absolutely worth it, as a place with beautiful winter trails, gorgeous fall foliage with spectacular tree colors, and a summit experience where one visitor played an Ave Maria on their horn for the birds and animals and people from all over the world enjoying the magnificent views. Mass Audubon’s Wachusett Meadow Wildlife Sanctuary at 113 Goodnow Road is Princeton’s most ecologically layered and most serenely pastoral wildlife sanctuary — with friendly, helpful people at the visitor center who recommend trails to begin with, a wonderful meander on windy days with snow flurries adding to the experience, large open fields to wander on, well-maintained trails to hike, very picturesque and quiet mid-week, helpful staff who answer questions and let you explore, a hike to the summit of Brown Hill with a nice view from the large clearing, Otter Pond, the Glacial Boulder, and a rustic play nature area perfect for kids to use their imagination — described as a great wildlife sanctuary with a large selection of trails where every minute of the experience was loved, as a beautiful place that is large, open, and well-maintained with picturesque quiet trails, and as a place where we loved every minute and step of the experience at this beautiful wildlife sanctuary everywhere we looked. Echo Lake Trail off Westminster Road is Princeton’s most family-accessible and most gently rewarding entry into the Wachusett Mountain trail system — open from 7 AM with a route that winds across a small stream and through a pine wood down to Echo Lake, mountain springs, beautiful forest and rocks, a modestly challenging but nicely maintained intermediate-level hike, lots of newts on cloudy days after rain, and the ability to be turned into a loop with the Harrington trail — described as a nice starter trail for inexperienced hikers where kids ages 3 to 12 all enjoyed the experience with parents helping the youngest at some parts, as an intermediate level trail with nice sights, and as a nice, well-maintained, interesting, and modestly challenging hike on this small mountain.

Princeton’s dining scene is compact but quietly remarkable — anchored by two of the most acclaimed destination restaurants of any rural community their size in Worcester County, complemented by a beloved café and specialty bottle shop that has become the essential gathering point for the town’s outdoor-recreation community. The Barn Princeton at 174 Worcester Road is Princeton’s most atmospherically enchanting and most effusively praised destination restaurant — open Thursday through Saturday from 4 PM to 10 PM and Sunday from 4 to 9 PM with a diverse menu offering all kinds of comfort food, vegan options, craft cocktails, creative dishes described as always fresh and flavorful, a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, outdoor seating discovered by regulars on return visits, and an excellent wine list — described as an absolute gem where rustic meets elegance without pretentiousness, as a perfect spot in the middle of nowhere where the menu is eclectic and there is something for everyone with ingredients so excellent that you can tell the chef and owner are in lockstep with creative vision, and as a place where the food was OUT OF THIS WORLD with a welcoming cozy atmosphere and server Corie described as amazing. Mountainside at 213 Mountain Road is Princeton’s most beautifully situated and most warmly community-beloved café and event space — open Thursday through Sunday from 8 AM to 3 PM with amazing baked products, banana bread with a special cream cheese topping described as very nice, English tea accenting the bread, blueberry crumble with bowls of whipped cream described as so delicious when catered for a backyard wedding, a simple menu with quality ingredients, indoor cozy environment especially for winter, surrounding lush pasture on sunny afternoons, wedding and event catering with owner Katherine described as so great to work with — described as a hidden gem where staff are very friendly and professional with a nice outside view and plenty of parking, as a perfect spot to spend time with friends or family surrounded by lush pasture on a sunny afternoon with a simple menu and quality ingredients at a reasonable price, and as a place where guests could not stop talking about how amazing the food was at a rehearsal dinner, with many who had never been before planning to come back. The Thirsty Lab at 206 Worcester Road rounds out Princeton’s dining picture as the town’s most unexpectedly curated and most warmly community-treasured bottle shop and café — open Monday through Saturday from 8 AM with an awesome selection of local craft brews and wines you won’t find at big box stores, great local food products including excellent goat cheeses, great iced coffee, tasty pastries, a wonderful craft beer selection, a great assortment of local food products, weekly wine and beer tastings described as a fun way to learn, and a friendly staff described as offering great recommendations — described as a hidden gem that you can sometimes stumble across and then it becomes a place you go out of your way to visit occasionally, as a go-to stop after birding at Wachusett Meadow where tasty coffee, pastries, and a wonderful craft beer selection await alongside friendly staff and owners, and as a place where you feel more like a connoisseur than an alcoholic because everything stocked is high quality across a variety of prices.
