Best Sights and Neighborhoods to Visit in Natick, MA

Natick, Massachusetts, is a town of approximately 37,000 residents in Middlesex County — one of the most culturally ambitious and most geographically rewarding MetroWest communities in Greater Boston, a place whose combination of a beloved independent arts venue in a converted firehouse, a sweeping Mass Audubon wildlife sanctuary in the heart of town, a walkable downtown center with some of the best independent restaurants in the region, and the South Natick village’s stunning falls along the Charles River give it a depth and distinctiveness that consistently surprise visitors expecting only another suburban stop along the Massachusetts Turnpike. Incorporated in 1651, Natick is one of the oldest towns in Massachusetts and carries the distinction of having been the site of one of the most significant “Praying Indian” communities in colonial New England — a town established by missionary John Eliot as a place for Christianized Wampanoag and other Native Americans to live, whose legacy is preserved through the town’s historical society and museum. The Center for Arts in Natick (TCAN) at 14 Summer Street is Natick’s most beloved and most enthusiastically celebrated cultural institution — open Tuesday through Friday from noon and Saturday from noon to 2 PM with an intimate converted firehouse venue offering excellent sound, comfortable seating with plenty of leg room, great sight lines, eclectic programming ranging from national touring acts to local discoveries, beer, cider, wine, and snacks including first-class popcorn, and free parking — described as quite possibly the favorite concert venue of regular attendees who drive from out of state specifically for shows, as a small space where there probably isn’t a bad seat to be found and the renovation has been beautiful, and as a wonderful place to experience music where the programming is eclectic, the room is intimate, and the sound is excellent and not too loud. South Natick Falls at Mill Lane in South Natick village is Natick’s most strikingly beautiful and most photographically beloved natural landmark — accessible 24 hours with an absolutely stunning little waterfall and paved pathway along the Charles River, several benches to sit and rest, accessible pathway, frogs, ducks, geese, and other wildlife regularly present, and the Natick History Museum and Bacon Free Library sitting on the same adorable street making it one of the most picturesque civic corners in all of MetroWest — described as one of the favorite places in all of New England for sitting, picnicking, and getting grounded and centered, as a must-see where prom pictures and senior pictures come out amazing, and as a beautiful place where a small waterfall and waterside benches make it perfect for a lunch stop. The Natick History Museum at 58 Eliot Street rounds out Natick’s historical picture as the town’s most compact and most artifact-rich keeper of local memory — open Tuesday from 3 to 5 PM and Thursday from 10 AM to 1 PM in the basement of the Bacon Free Library with a collection of artifacts and maps of the early town described as interesting enough to make the trip well worth it — described as relatively small but having articles well worth seeing, with staff described as extremely helpful and totally informed on the material on display.

Natick’s outdoor landscape is shaped by the Charles River to the south and a remarkable collection of conservation properties that make this town one of the most trail-rich communities in MetroWest — from Mass Audubon’s sprawling Broadmoor Wildlife Sanctuary to the town forests threading through the residential neighborhoods. Mass Audubon’s Broadmoor Wildlife Sanctuary at 280 Eliot Street is Natick’s most ecologically magnificent and most strikingly varied outdoor destination — open Tuesday through Sunday from 9 AM with easy scenic trails through forests, meadows, and boardwalks over wetlands, turtles, ducks, birds, and abundant wildlife throughout, boardwalk views described as a must-see, a visitor center with an energetic staff member described as really full of energy, and free admission for Natick and Sherborn residents — described as a hidden gem perfect for a relaxing walk, birdwatching, and spotting wildlife without going far, as an extremely beautiful place full of great spots for walks and photography and a perfect place to see wildlife that is a gem in the area and a must visit, and as a beautiful wildlife reservation where the boardwalk is amazing and there are more trails to keep exploring on every visit. Cochituate State Park at 43 Commonwealth Road is Natick’s most expansively family-complete and most actively recreational state park — open from 8 AM with kayaking, rowing, and paddleboarding on Lake Cochituate, picnic areas with tables near the water, open fields perfect for soccer, and a beach where swimming is possible when algae conditions permit — described as a nice place to take a walk, have a picnic, or go boating with kids, as a wonderful place for families to BBQ and relax with lots of fields for soccer, and as a beautiful park great for dogs and picnics with paddleboarding always fun even when swimming is off. Hunnewell Forest at the Oak Street lot is Natick’s most charmingly intimate and most regularly visited town forest — accessible 24 hours with a good network of trails including hilly sections and water along one of the paths, ducks and swans nesting in the brook adjoining the beginning of the trail, coyotes and deer populating the rest, and a parking area described as though the forest is Natick’s very own Hundred Acre Wood — described as a beautiful spot mostly flat and shaded with plenty of receptacles along the walk, as a great little town forest good for a 45-minute to 1-hour hike that is quite nice despite not being very large, and as super convenient for those who live nearby with a good network of trails that make for a nice walk.

Natick’s dining scene is anchored by a downtown center that has evolved into one of MetroWest’s most appealing independent restaurant corridors — Main Street and West Central Street offering a walkable strip of genuinely excellent kitchens within steps of TCAN and the town common, complemented by restaurants along the Route 9 corridor that reward the short drive. Buttercup at 13 West Central Street is Natick’s most critically acclaimed and most occasion-worthy dinner destination — open Tuesday through Saturday from 4:30 PM with half-dozen oysters, mushroom risotto, French onion soup, and duck confit all described as outstanding when ordered as specials, server wine guidance described as excellent with two bottles of red pairing beautifully with everything, ambiance described as incredibly comfortable, and reservation described as absolutely necessary given limited seating — described as having had an absolutely amazing experience from food to service to atmosphere, as a place where the specials were crushed with zero regrets and the visit definitely won’t be the last, and as a restaurant worth every repeat visit. Lola’s Italian Kitchen & Market at 9 Main Street is Natick’s most warmly personal and most enthusiastically praised Italian market and sandwich destination — open seven days from 9 AM with Sunday closing at 5 PM, with the Godfather described as having tons of moist and crispy freshly cooked chicken cutlets that go really well with red peppers, gluten-free hot steak and cheese described as a rarity in the GF world and so freaking good that a visitor would give 6 stars, Italian Wedding Soup described as fresh and homemade and just a little different from what you usually get, GF cannoli described as so good, and refrigerated and frozen items including bronze-cut and air-dried pasta available for purchase — described as a place waited too long to visit and will absolutely be returning to, as a spot where the smells, atmosphere, and choices exceeded expectations from the moment of walking in, and as having wonderful service by young staff clearly well trained. 7 South Bottle + Kitchen at 7 South Avenue rounds out Natick’s dining picture as the town’s most creatively stocked and most genuinely neighborhood-beloved bar and kitchen — open Tuesday through Saturday from 5 PM and Sunday from 5 to 9 PM with fried feta described as a must-try, Duck Confit Flat Bread described as delicate yet robust and perfectly sized, Potato Kegs with Chicken Wings described as so regularly ordered that staff recognize callers on the phone, Skull Candy and Lavender Haze cocktails described as a nice start with hopes kept high, and an awesome vibe with amazing menu and cool staff — described as a great Friday night family go-to with a great mix of creative dishes, craft drinks, and a relaxed welcoming vibe where the menu has something for everyone and everything tried was fresh and beautifully prepared, and as a place where if you lived closer you would frequent more often.
