Short Answer: Brown spots on a Raleigh or Greenville lawn in June trace to one of five common causes: brown patch disease on fescue, dollar spot on under-fertilized turf, drought stress in sunny exposed sections, pet urine damage at the edge of patio areas, or crabgrass that has invaded a thin area and looks like a brown patch from the porch. The diagnostic test is simple: walk to the patch, look at the shape and color of the active edge, pull a few blades and look for lesions, and lift a handful of turf to see if the roots are intact. Each cause has a distinct fingerprint. Brown patch produces tan circular patches with a smoky ring on fescue. Pet damage produces dead centers with bright green halos. Drought stress shows up first in southwest-facing exposures. Crabgrass looks brown from a distance because its blades are wider and lighter green than the surrounding fescue. Get the diagnosis right and one treatment solves the issue. Get it wrong and you treat the wrong thing for three weeks.
You came home to your North Raleigh or Greenville lawn last weekend and noticed something that was not there a week ago. A patch of off-color turf near the side fence. A circle of tan grass under the maple tree. A streak of brown along the patio edge where the dog likes to lie down. Welcome to lawn diagnosis season. June is when most of the brown spot problems show up in our region, and the same five causes account for nearly all of them.
We walk dozens of properties across Wake, Pitt, Johnston, and Franklin Counties through June, and the diagnostic process is consistent. The diagnosis lives in the details. Shape of the patch. Color of the edge. State of the roots when you pull a handful. Once you know what each cause looks like, you can usually figure it out from the back deck in about ninety seconds. Here is the walkthrough we use.
Cause One: Brown Patch on Fescue
Brown patch is the most common brown spot cause across central and eastern North Carolina fescue lawns in June. It hits because the conditions are perfect: night temperatures above 65 degrees, mornings with heavy dew, and tall fescue trying to survive in a climate it does not love.
The visual fingerprint is consistent. Circular or irregular tan to brown patches, typically two to six feet across when first noticed but capable of growing to ten feet or more. The active edge shows a gray-to-smoky ring (sometimes called a smoke ring) where the fungus is moving outward. Inside the patch the grass blades have a bleached look, with visible lesions on individual blades if you look closely.
Confirmation test: pull a few blades from the active edge and look at them in direct light. Brown patch produces small dark lesions, usually irregular in shape, somewhere along the blade. The roots are still attached when you tug at the turf. The disease is on the leaves, not the roots.
The fix combines cultural change and chemistry. Raise mowing height to 4 inches. Shift watering to early morning only. Avoid summer nitrogen. If the disease is expanding fast, a fungicide rotation (azoxystrobin and propiconazole) timed to first symptoms catches it. Most home lawns recover within three to four weeks with intervention.
Cause Two: Dollar Spot
Dollar spot is the smaller cousin to brown patch. The patches are smaller (named for their resemblance to silver dollars), and they appear in clusters rather than as one large circle. Often the cluster pattern is what gives it away: rather than one big patch, you see twenty or thirty small bleached spots, two to four inches across, scattered across an area of the lawn.
The blade-level signature is distinctive. Dollar spot produces a clean bleached band across the middle of the blade, with reddish-brown borders on either side of the bleached zone. Brown patch lesions are darker and more irregular.
Dollar spot signals nitrogen deficiency. It hits hardest on lawns that were under-fed in spring or on irrigated lawns where heavy summer rain has leached available nitrogen. A modest nitrogen application (around half a pound of slow-release N per thousand square feet) often resolves dollar spot without fungicide on residential fescue. Combine with cultural changes (morning watering, raised mowing height) and most home lawns recover in two to three weeks.
Cause Three: Drought Stress on Sun-Exposed Sections
Drought stress on Raleigh and Greenville fescue follows a predictable pattern. The damage shows up first on south and southwest-facing sections, on slopes, along driveways and sidewalks where concrete reflects heat, and in any zone where irrigation coverage is weak.
The visual signature: the patches are not circular. They follow sun exposure and irrigation patterns. The grass goes through stages, from green to blue-gray to straw color over about a week. The patch edges are gradual rather than sharp.
The footprint test confirms it. Walk across a suspected drought area in the morning. If your footprints stay visible for thirty seconds or longer (the grass is not springing back), the lawn is wilting from moisture stress. A healthy hydrated lawn recovers footprints within seconds.
The fix is mostly about future setup. Shift to deep infrequent watering (one inch per week, early morning, in one or two cycles with cycle-and-soak to handle the red clay). Raise mowing height to 4 inches. Check irrigation coverage in the affected zones with a tuna can test. The damage already done will recover in September when temperatures cool, but you can stop further loss with the watering correction.
Cause Four: Pet Urine Damage
Pet damage is probably the most common cause of small brown spots in suburban Wake and Pitt County yards, and it is also one of the easiest to diagnose once you know the pattern. The signature is unmistakable.
The patches are typically circular, six to eighteen inches across, with a dead brown center surrounded by a bright green halo of stimulated growth. The halo happens because diluted nitrogen from urine acts as fertilizer, while the concentrated center of the spot is essentially salt-burning the grass. The location tells you too. Dog urine patches concentrate in favorite spots, often along fence lines, near patios, or in a specific corner of the yard.
No insecticide or fungicide does anything for pet damage. The treatment is dilution and recovery. Water the affected areas heavily within hours of the dog going (gallons of water, not minutes of irrigation) to dilute the nitrogen and salt. Reseed in early September when cooler weather returns. Training the dog to use a designated gravel or mulch area, or rotating spots around the yard, reduces concentration.
One product worth mentioning: dog rocks or urine-neutralizing supplements can reduce the nitrogen concentration in the urine itself. The science on these is mixed, but anecdotally many of our customers see modest improvement.
Cause Five: Crabgrass and Other Summer Weed Takeover
Here is the one homeowners miss most often. A section of lawn that looks brown from the porch is actually full of crabgrass. From a distance, crabgrass appears lighter green or even brown because the blades are wider, lighter in color, and laid flatter than the surrounding fescue. Up close, you can see it is alive and growing. From twenty feet away, it just looks like the lawn is dying.
This shows up most often in fescue lawns where the pre-emergent failed or was applied too late. The crabgrass came up in April or May, established itself in thin spots and along the lawn edges, and is now visible as an off-color section of lawn that contrasts with the dark green fescue around it.
Visual confirmation: get close. Crabgrass has wide flat blades, often with a tinge of red at the base, growing in a rosette pattern that radiates from a central crown. Fescue grows in upright bunches with narrower blades. If what you thought was a brown patch is actually a weed takeover, the treatment is different.
Post-emergent crabgrass control in June on fescue is tricky because most products that kill crabgrass also stress fescue, especially in heat. Quinclorac is the safer choice on fescue. Spot-treat in the cooler morning hours, ideally on a day below 85 degrees. Two applications spaced two to three weeks apart catch crabgrass at the smaller growth stages. The bigger the crabgrass plant when you treat it, the harder it is to kill.
Other Causes Worth Mentioning
The five above cover most of what we see. A few less common causes round out the list. Fertilizer burn from a recent application applied too heavily or to a wet lawn produces sharp-edged brown stripes following the spreader pattern. Sod webworm and armyworm damage on Bermuda lawns in eastern Pitt County produces thinning areas with chewed leaf tips visible in the morning. Take-all root rot on St. Augustine sections of lawn (less common in Raleigh than in coastal Carolina but possible) produces yellowing patches with roots that pull up easily.
Spring dead spot on Bermuda lawns shows up as roughly circular dead patches that should have recovered by late spring but did not, often visible into early summer. Iron deficiency on heavily limed soils produces yellowing rather than browning, generally across whole sections rather than in patches.
When in doubt, the four-test method covers most diagnostic situations. Look at the shape and edge. Pull a few blades and look for lesions. Lift a handful of turf to check the roots. Note the sun exposure and irrigation pattern. With those four observations, an experienced eye can usually narrow it down in a few minutes.
