Best Sights and Neighborhoods to Visit in Sherborn, MA

Sherborn, Massachusetts, is a town of approximately 4,500 residents in Middlesex County — one of the most genuinely rural and most ecologically intact small communities within commuting distance of Boston, incorporated in 1674 and still carrying the quiet character of a New England farming village whose landscape of stone walls, horse farms, conservation land, and the winding Charles River has been so carefully preserved that the town functions less as a suburb and more as a pastoral counterpoint to the metropolitan region surrounding it. Sherborn has no traffic lights, no commercial center of consequence, and almost no chain retail — just a post office, a town hall, a beloved playground, a gas station that happens to contain one of the most astonishing sandwich counters in the region, and thousands of acres of Trustees of Reservations, Mass Audubon, and town conservation land threaded with trails along the Charles River and through hemlock-shaded gorges. Sweet Meadow Farm at 111 Coolidge Street is Sherborn’s most warmly community-embraced and most joyfully family-beloved working farm destination — open seven days from 9 AM with riding camp described by girls who attend every summer as something they rave about yearly, VIP pony parties, kids feeding various animals, petting the wallaby, holding bunnies, putting bows on pigs, animal interaction with all kinds of farm creatures, staff described as wonderful and so much fun, hay available for small animals described as by far the best by a guinea pig owner of over twenty years, and an owner and staff who appear to genuinely enjoy what they do — described as an AMAZING place with a lot of fun feeding animals and getting to know their routine more closely where it’s perfect for birthday parties for kids and even an adult had a lot of fun, and as a place where a 7-year-old’s VIP Pony Party was a splurge but the kids and parents all loved it and the birthday girl is still talking about it. Sunshine Farm at 41 Kendall Avenue just over the Natick town line is Sherborn’s most seasonally celebrated and most family-frequented farm stand, pick-your-own, and ice cream destination — open seven days from 10 AM with U-pick for every season, a kiddie scoop described as huge for just around $5 with tons of flavors including Purple Cow as a personal family favorite, amazing local produce, seasonal vegetables and fruits, pies, cheese, flowers, and plants, lovely cheeses and a good variety of pumpkins in the fall, and many outside picnic tables — described as one of the prettiest hidden gems in the area where ice cream is a MUST and different seasonal activities like strawberry picking are such cool family activities, as a great place with tons of flavors and plenty of places to sit where you can also walk around the farm, and as a place one family is a big fan of where the U-pick farm for every season is such a cool family activity. Mass Audubon’s Broadmoor Wildlife Sanctuary at 280 Eliot Street on the Sherborn-Natick border rounds out the town’s cultural and natural heritage picture as the region’s most accessibly beautiful and most wildlife-generously populated sanctuary — open Tuesday through Sunday from 9 AM to 5 PM with a boardwalk over wetlands described as a must-see, easy scenic trails through forests, meadows, and boardwalks, lots of birds and turtles spotted from the boardwalk, a nature center with an energetic staff, well-marked and well-kept trails, and free admission for Natick and Sherborn residents — described as an extremely beautiful place full of great spots for walks and photography that is a gem in the area and a must visit, as a hidden gem with easy scenic trails perfect for a relaxing walk, birdwatching, and spotting wildlife, and as a beautiful wildlife reservation with an amazing boardwalk and turtles, ducks, and birds.

Sherborn’s outdoor landscape is extraordinary in its depth and variety — the town contains some of the finest conservation hiking in eastern Massachusetts, anchored by the Charles River corridor, a dramatic rocky overlook with King Philip’s War historical significance, and the Upper Charles Rail Trail threading through the town’s agricultural western end. Rocky Narrows off Forest Street is Sherborn’s most scenically dramatic and most enthusiastically praised Trustees of Reservations property — open 24 hours with well-marked trails offering varying degrees of difficulty, a highlight view over the Charles River especially with fall foliage, a hilltop lookout, overlooks, water and some swamp, a canoe landing area described as a perfect place to bring lunch, a pastoral meadow approach, and occasional runners and families making for a pleasant social trail experience — described as a wonderful hiking spot that feels like a hidden gem where the trails are well-maintained, winding through peaceful woods with lots of shade and a highlight view over the Charles River with fall foliage, as a place where excellent trails offer some quite steep sections needing attention and the overlooks, water, and swamp are all accessed through a pastoral meadow, and as a place delivering perfectly on the search for a scenic drive and an easy place to hike where the entire loop takes about one to two hours and the well-placed signs make for an enjoyable and stress-free hike. King Phillip’s Overlook off South Main Street is Sherborn’s most historically resonant and most panoramically rewarding hiking destination — open 24 hours with very nice overlook views, great dog hiking, mostly easy flat terrain with occasional hills and rocks described as fine for a normal 67-year-old with a walking stick, dog-friendly trails, different places to picnic, and trails near the ruins of the old asylum adding a haunting historical layer — described as a very nice overlook and great dog hike where the trails are just maintained enough to be a bit of a challenge but passable, as a perfect fall day with excellent trails and views, and as a very nice place for moderate hiking with a family and dog where the small parking lot helpfully prevents too many people from being there at once. Upper Charles Rail Trail at Whitney Street is Sherborn’s most multi-use and most expansively rural trail access point — with a great scenic walking trail intersecting the Cochituate Rail Trail, beautiful rural scenery, a gravel and paved path, picnic benches all along the way, extensive brush encouraging wildlife including coyotes often found on the path, and a trail that is smooth and well-kept where crushed gravel sections are maintained — described as a great scenic walking trail with beautiful rural scenery and a gravel and paved path where picnic benches line the way, as a great place to walk, run, or take a bike ride and great for photos, and as a great avenue for locals and visitors to get fresh air by walking or biking on this trail.

Sherborn’s dining scene is one of the most pleasantly surprising and most charmingly compact of any town its size in Massachusetts — anchored by a celebrated neighborhood tavern on North Main Street, complemented by one of the most unexpectedly outstanding food counters in New England hidden inside a local gas station, and drawing on nearby Ashland for the kind of reliably excellent pub dining that rounds out the picture for Sherborn residents. Fireside Tavern Sherborn at 33 North Main Street is Sherborn’s most centrally positioned and most warmly neighborhood-embraced full-service restaurant — open seven days from 5 PM with bambam shrimp described as loved, beef short ribs for catering described as outstanding, catering trays of potatoes and green beans described as loved by everyone at a big family party, server Jenna described as amazing, well-informed, attentive, efficient, and lovely, an amazing old fashioned, a cozy small-town vibe, and a casual neighborhood bar and restaurant atmosphere — described as absolutely amazing and such a pleasure to go to where the food is top-notch and the service even better and a reviewer from South Carolina would travel all the way up there just for another bite, as a place where a husband declared upon walking in that it was going to be their new favorite restaurant and everything was great including food, atmosphere, and the old fashioned, and as a catering experience rated 10 out of 10 that was flawless in communicating, getting it done, and even bringing it out to the back of the car for easy pickup. Jackson’s Kitchen at Sherborn Fuel at 21 South Main Street is Sherborn’s most legendarily surprising and most unanimously rapturous hidden gem — a food counter inside the town’s gas station open Monday through Saturday from 10 AM to 6 PM with an Italian sub described as so good the husband thought his wife had driven into Boston’s North End and couldn’t believe the quality of the meat, chicken shawarma described as THE BEST ever had with perfectly seasoned and cooked chicken and a delicious sauce in a homemade wrap described as to die for, a pressed Cuban described as so full of flavor, a roasted tomato relish focaccia sandwich described as everything hoped for with incredible flavors and perfect pesto, a fried chicken dinner described as a 10 out of 10 with delicious chicken and great mashed potatoes and green beans, and an owner named Matthew described as great to meet — described as a gem inside a gas station where the tomato mozzarella Caprese sandwich on focaccia bread described as one of the best ever had and the quality left a visitor already looking forward to going back, as a place where oh my god the food was awesome and the prepared meals were innovative and delicious and the whole place was so clean and well organized with a public restroom so clean it defied all gas station expectations, and as a much-welcomed addition to Sherborn offering very high quality food and extremely friendly staff. Ashland Ale House at 23 Pond Street in adjacent Ashland rounds out Sherborn’s dining picture as the region’s most reliably excellent and most enthusiastically embraced American pub within easy reach — open seven days from 11:30 AM with an enormous beer selection, juicy burgers described as clearly high quality and fresh meat, well-spread nachos fully loaded with toppings, a Tom’s Turkey burger described as juicy and flavorful with Wachusett Blueberry beer as a perfect complement, a Big Fish sandwich, a Reese Sundae described as ridiculous and delicious, comfortable booths, a well-designed bar with many seats, and server Katie described as absolutely wonderful — described as honestly incredible and a true American experience where the beer selection is enormous and the burgers are very juicy with clearly high quality and fresh meat, as a place that has become a new favorite where they’ll be back because of a server’s service alone, and as a very busy pub with a large bar and a very good assortment of draft brews with solid food.
