Any newly planted seed needs consistent moisture, seeding in the fall offers many benefits for that. Fall usually brings a lot more rain, helping to keep the soil moist and helps reduce the need for extra watering.

Feeding Your Lawn

Fertilizing and seeding is all a part of feeding your lawn. This is very beneficial to your lawn as it helps build strong, deep grass roots for a thicker, greener lawn come spring. When your lawn is seeded in early fall, it allows time for the new grass roots to become established before winter.

There are several reasons that fall is the best growing season. With cool-season grass seed, the warm soil with the cool temperatures encourages the seed to germinate more quickly.

In Ohio, the first frost can be unexpected, and winter can quickly approach with no warning. Therefore, you should start thinking of overseeding your lawn anytime from late August through November. This gives your lawn some time to develop new grass growth before the winter arrives.

Fall Seeding

There are several reasons that fall is a good growing season. Overseeding helps repair any bare spots or areas in your lawn that be may thinning. This will be especially beneficial to lawns this year because of the armyworm invasion we experienced and the damage that they caused.

If you’re looking to do-it-yourself, there are a few things to consider. Make sure that you have the right grass seed for your lawn. Most cool-season lawns are made up of a mixture of Kentucky bluegrass and rye grass.

Before seeding any bare areas, you will want to prepare the soil first. Help break up the soil by raking the top few inches, this gives the seed more room to get into the soil and germinate. When you are looking to overseed your full lawn, you will want to not only seed it, but make sure to add fertilizer as well. This will give your lawn, and the new seed, the extra nutrients it needs to germinate to a thicker, greener lawn.

Whether you are seeding a few bare areas in your lawn or overseeding your full lawn, remember to water the area regularly.

Seeding in the fall gives the seed many months to develop before reaching spring where they will continue to become established well before the summer heat begins. The precipitation that comes with the months of fall makes it a great growing season for your grass.
